All vehicles used for competition, testing or training must be insured, regardless of where they are operated. Read more about motor liability insurance in motor sports.

  • For short-term competition use, a temporary transfer permit and the related temporary motor liability insurance may be used in certain cases.
  • A transfer permit can be obtained, for example, for a vehicle that has been taken out of traffic when it participates in a competition in Finland that is part of the competition calendar of the national motor sports center organization.

Transfer permits and temporary motor liability insurance are not granted for vehicles that are unsuitable for road traffic and cannot be registered, such as go-karts. These vehicles must be insured with a motor insurance company.

A transfer permit is applied for from Traficom for the period of use required. Transfer permit and temporary motor liability insurance are issued by vehicle inspection offices and customs offices on behalf of Traficom and the Finnish Motor Insurers' Centre. • Temporary motor liability insurance is only valid for the duration of the transfer permit.
  • A transfer permit only allows you to participate in competitions within the competition area.
  • A transfer permit may not be used to drive to or from the competition venue, nor may it be used for practice driving.

The cost of temporary motor liability insurance in motor sports

Temporary motor liability insurance is also granted for vehicles not used in competition. Since the risks involved in motor sports are higher than in normal driving, the price of insurance is also higher. The price of temporary motor liability insurance is the same for all vehicles used in competition:

  • €35 for the first day
  • €20 for each additional day.

The new pricing will apply to temporary motor liability insurance policies taken out on or after January 1, 2026.

Foreign racing vehicles

Transfer permits are also issued for foreign vehicles entering Finland for competition purposes. Issuing a transfer permit requires a notification, confirmed by the Tax Administration, regarding the vehicle’s tax-exempt use. The notification can be made on the Tax Administration's website. The service requires strong authentication to log in, which can also be done with foreign credentials.
