Frontier motor liability insurance

When do I need to take out frontier motor liability insurance?

Frontier motor liability insurance must be taken for a foreign registered vehicle, brought to Finland for temporary use, if:

  • the vehicle is registered in a country outside the green card system, or
  • the vehicle does not have a valid green card.

If the validity of the green card expires before the vehicle leaves the country, frontier motor liability insurance must be taken for the remaining time.

The minimum period of validity of frontier motor liability insurance policies is 30 days and the maximum period of validity is one year.

No frontier motor liability insurance is granted for a vehicle registered in an EEA country. The vehicle must be in Finland or at the border on its way to Finland when the insurance period starts. Frontier motor liability insurance is granted by insurance companies and the Finnish Motor Insurers' Centre. Frontier motor liability insurance is also sold at customs offices on behalf of the Finnish Motor Insurers' Centre.

Frontier motor liability insurance is valid in the whole EEA and in Switzerland. However, any personal injuries sustained by the driver of a vehicle covered by frontier motor liability insurance are only compensated only if the accident has occurred in Finland, Sweden or Norway.

Frontier motor liability insurance does not accrue insurance or claims history, nor does it qualify for bonus.

From 1 January 2017 onwards, frontier motor liability insurance bought from the Finnish Motor Insurers' Centre can only be paid by card.
