If you are not at fault in an accident occurred in the
EEA
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area
(EEA) and you have sustained injuries or losses in a road accident not
caused by yourself outside your home country but within the EEA, you are
entitled to claim compensation for the loss from the relevant claims representative
in your home country.
All motor insurers operating in any of the member states of the EEA have
their own claims representatives in all the other member states. The claims
representative will handle and settle your claim arising from the accident.
If you do not know the claims representative appointed in Finland by the
responsible motor insurer, please ask the Information Centre at the Finnish
Motor Insurers' Centre.
If the motor insurer has not appointed a claims representative in Finland,
your claim will be handled by the Finnish Motor Insurers' Centre.
- Ask your collision partner to show his or her driver's licence, details
of the car and insurance policy.
- Fill out the accident report together with your collision partner
and make sure you get a copy of it. Find out the time limit for filing
an accident report.
- Call the police, if necessary.
- You can have your claim settled after your return home through the
claims representative appointed in Finland by the insurer that covered
the car that caused the accident.
- If you prefer, you can have the claim settled in the country of occurrence
with the insurer that covered the car that caused the accident.
- Whatever the case, you can always ask the Finnish Motor Insurers'
Centre for advice.
